Thought I'd start a thread for race meet location ideas. I've been scouring through the local go-kart tracks to see if there is one that might be suitable. The commercial ones are pretty expensive to hire and the club tracks are generally only open to club members.

I did however find one that looks promising but they state that currently no motorised vehicles are allowed to use it.

From what I can make out it used to be leased by the Adelaide Go Kart club but when the lease expired the council told the club they could no longer race on the land. So nowdadays its mostly used by stuff like pedal-prix

I'm going to give the council a call and have a chat. They might be receptive to what we are doing.

Will see how I go.

I spoke to the council land management team that look after the Gilman track and they said that the no motorised vehicles restriction had been put in place after negotiations between the council and local residents. They pretty adamant that the no powered vehicles rule would not be reversed. Seems the locals didn't like the noise. They said that the track is no longer actively maintained but they do weed spray the track. It is exclusively used as a spill over from the Victoria park track. So looks like it's back to the drawing board with this one.

Also reached out to the City Council to enquire about the Circuit in Victoria park. The Council told me that they only rented out to non-powered vehicles and that those events that used the area for powered vehicles were actually run by the state government under the SA Motorsport act which essentially overruled local council control.

Not sure we would ever get big enough to warrant that kind of involvement, so look like the Vic Park track is also off the list. This is a definite shame. She did say that she would get the events coordinator to touch base with me in case there was another option elsewhere.

One thing that did get mentioned in conversation was that Cyclekarting event might be more suited to a more rural town with the event being a draw card for attracting visitors. This makes a lot of sense, but where this might happen is anyones guess at this stage.

Hi Mick, I was wondering about the Oakbank racecourse, that may be an option in the car park areas and there is a bitumen road loop. Clive

Will look into it. There is also Morphettville which I know hires out parts of the complex for events. Another venue I just thought of is Adelaide International Raceway / Virginia Motorsport Park, both of which are purpose built venues. I think that the big challenge with private venues is cost. Council event hire is definitely a lot cheaper. But both require insurance, unless we can slide in under an existing clubs insurance scheme, such as an existing go-kart club.

I think that to have any meaningful regular meet / event on a commercial or council venue we will need to be incorporated as a club and have insurances in place as I suspect that no one will want to deal with us otherwise. Council already stated this. I did reach out to an insurance broker last week to find out how much public liability insurance would cost, just to get an idea. They said they should get back to me by the end of the week. This will give us a better idea of what we might be looking at for the future.

The thing we need to consider is that if we need to meet the cost of insurance, it would require a formal club structure with membership dues to generate the revenue to cover it. But, there is a bit of a quantum leap from where we are now, to having a formal regular meet in place. Insurance costs would mean a huge membership fee if we only have a handful of members. The challenge is how do we get from here to there without having somewhere to run?

I think that a private paddock / property is still a more viable proposition at this stage.

I guess the first thing is to get four or six cars ready.

Yes, I think that would be the way to go. Hopefully in the mean time we can get something in place or at least start planning. Or come across a venue that doesn't have so much red tape

Mid Murray Motorplex looks like a very interesting venue. Wonder what the deal is there?

There is an SA member in Victor Harbour with a running Cyclekart and a paddock @Swifty I've flicked him an invite to the group. Might be a good opportunity to organise a meet.

A group of cars await the start of the New Years Day 1926 Light Car event at Sellicks Beach.

I wonder if we could run at Silversands / Sellicks / Moana / Aldinga beach? Vehicle access permitted between 5.30am and 11:59pm on Aldinga, Moana, Sellicks and Silver Sands beaches

Should be able to find a spot away from everyone else.
